Tony Alva Print by Shepard Fairey (Obey)

Alva by Shepard Fairey

The next print sent to be released on the Obey Giant site is a collaboration between Tony Alva and Shepard Fairey. The piece is based on a photo of Alva from 1977 by photographer Glen E. Friedman and will be available online come March 11th. While the size of the run is unknown, we do know that it will be available in two colourways (orange and blue) with each print signed by Shepard, Tony and Glen. The word from Shepard:
Tuesday I’ll be the guest DJ on Henry Rollin’s shoe “Harmony in My Head” along with legendary skateboarder Tony Alva. The show is on LA’s indie 103.1 FM. If you are not in LA listen online at www.indie1031.fm. Expect to hear a lot of punk rock and stories about skateboarding. I can say that I may have had an insider advantage getting the gig considering that I did the indie 103.1 logo and I have done art for Rollins. It is no coincidence that Tony Alva is my co-host. Tony and I recently collaborated on a poster. The poster is my illustration of a photo of Tony from 1977 by photographer Glen E. Friedman who has captured amazing iconic moments in skateboarding, punk rock, and hip hop. Check out his site www.burningflags.com. To celebrate the release of the Alva collaboration, we will be doing a party/art opening Sat. March 8 at the Alva store at 1086 S. Fairfax. The posters as well as some fine art pieces will be available. The posters will be available online March 11. They are signed by me, Tony, and Glen
Check out the Obey Giant website for more information.

Lights Out at the Old California by Mike Klay

The latest art print by Mike Klay entitled "Lights Out at the Old California" is now officially for sale on his site (Powerslide Design). New Print by Dave Kinsey

Click picture to enlarge.

Unintended Consequence is the name of the brand new print by Dave Kinsey- and it's arguably his best to date. The piece is absolutely huge at 34 x 43 inches and comes in a low edition size of 50 with each print signed, stampde and numbered. I believe that this is Dave Kinsey's first giclee print- but if the results of the other BLK/MRKT giclee pieces (e.g. Ian Francis' works) are anything to go by the result will be incredible. Unfortunately with high quality comes high price; the print will cost you $600 excluding postage and packaging. You can buy it now from the BLK/MRKT Store.

ImageKind

ImageKind isn't the sort of thing that is typically mentioned on FYW but we feel it's most definitely worth a mention. In short, it's a open edition print store which sells everything from prints of famous works of art to pieces created by users of the site: the "Member Art" section is a great way of supporting fresh talent without having to pay over the odds; typical price for a print is under $20. If you're the artistic type you can also sell your artwork through the site and keep 100% of the profit made. It's a great project, check it out here.

Bast Bug Box

The Bast shop has recently been updated with a new series of "Bug Box" works- although just one is shown on the main site, there are a few completely unique pieces available if you inquire. The signed one-off artworks were created by printing neon pink ink on a genuine entomology case, still complete with insect(s) inside. From what I've been told these are selling out fast- which is unsurprising considering the very reasonable price; the smallest size will run you just $400 excluding delivery. There are a variety of sizes available, inquire through the BastNY site for more.

Prefab (A.K.A. Prefab77) and Electrik Sheep

"Heist" by Prefab (A.K.A. Prefab77)

Prefab (sometimes known as Prefab77) are a Newcastle-based collective of artists producing good artwork at good prices. Still relatively new to the scene after kicking off with their "Thick As Thieves" show in October last year, they already have a wide variety of impressive work under their belt. Prices for their prints start at just £25 and the majority are nice and large; check out the Prefab site to see what's currently available. As if that wasn't enough they also own Electrik Sheep, a store/gallery which happens to have some of the most reasonable prices I've ever seen; click here to visit, it's worth it.

M1 by Mear One

M1 by Mear One is one of the most impressive prints we've seen in a long time; each of the edition-of-30 has been hand made from start to finish by Mear using a combination of stencilling, drawing, painting and more- read below for the details (courtesy of the Baurmann Gallery).
The paper used was Strathmore 500 Series Bristol 4-Ply Vellum Surface (Cold Press). Each edition is unique and employs elements of his style he has perfected over the years. He started by sketching [with charcoal or pencil] characters, ideas, and philosophies on some of the editions. He would either sketch on the paper before paint application [of the first layer of brown] or use charcoal to draw in the still wet layer. The one’s he did not initially draw on, he spent more time painting, distorting, and experimenting. He then applied a varying layer of gesso, which helps give the amazingly rich texture.

The gesso would also be distorted and manipulated heavily, especially using many of the techniques perfected in his “Live Art”. Depending on the effect and end result he way striving for, the gesso was applied to either the entire surface, parts [to show the under drawings], or splattered and scrapped heavily. A layer of yellow was then applied over the gesso and worked much further. He then switched up to Orange on some of them, which then led to a beautiful Orange/Yellow mix on the later editions when Yellow was used again. Throughout each step of creation, he would do such things as throw water on the paper [from his paints], sand it down, scrape it w/ his tools, shellac or splatter the paint and continually try to experiment and take things further.

The 2-color phoenix logo stencil was then hand cut by MEAR and sprayed differently for each edition. When dry, he then sketched more on top of most of the editions [some truly look so much like paintings, he left them be]. To sign it, he gave each one a huge street style tag. He also used an oil based paint marker that, even when dry, still gives it an extremely wet look.

Seeing it done in the pictures and video though will truly show why these editions are the best ones we have produced yet in my opinion and why we could not be happier with the results. By the weekend, lots of pictures should be posted.

The name of this series and style of edition is “Mono Distortions”, this one being titled “M1”. MEAR created the name to reflect his process, which heavily involves distorting, and manipulating his materials and the paper constantly.
The process pictures which can be found here speak for themselves; every print is completely unique and essentially an original piece from Mear One. Each of the M1's comes signed, numbered, hand-finished and is approximately 18" x 29"- yet the price is still surprisingly reasonable at £250 + P&P. If you want to order, send an e-mail to info[~at~]baurmanngallery.com at 1PM PST this Friday (February 22nd). Strictly first come first serve, strictly one per order. Good luck.

Whale Bone Grove by Aaron Horkey: Japan Bloodplate Edition

The extremely popular Japan edition of the fast selling Whale Bone Grove print by Aaron Horkey is set for release approximately 12 hours from now. With the first two variants selling out in just a few minutes there's certainly going to be a lot of competition for these, especially with only 45 available from Burlesque (full edition size is 65). There's a lot of confusion on exactly how to order what with the only information given being in the form of some badly-translated Japanese, so here's a small (and hopefully correct) rundown on how to order.

On Tuesday February 19th (tomorrow) at 20:57pm Japan time (that's 11:57am GMT) an e-mail address will appear on the Burlesque of Japan site where the red ???????????? currently appear. As soon as it pops up, you have to send a message to the address given with the following information filled in:

・Amount=
・Your name=
・Address=
・City=
・Country=
・Postal Code=
・Telephone=
・Postage (EMS or Air Printed Matter )=
・Paypal account Email address=
・Special Instructions=

It would be a good idea to work this stuff out and fill it in beforehand so you can get the mail out as quickly as possible. In terms of shipping, EMS is slightly more expensive but offers order tracking and insurance. Total price for the print is 3000 Yen (~£141) plus shipping costs which are given on the Burlesque site. If you're lucky, you will receive a message back with your Paypal invoice.
